  REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PASTEUR

Pasteur Institutes USA

“Americans have a debt of gratitude to France, and here we have the opportunity to show that we remember what France did for us during the Revolution–not only its king but also its citizens.... I think we will find no more appropriate name; Louis Pasteur’s name will teach the children of future generations that which we wish them to know.”

—Charles William Eliot, the Harvard University President who advocated the choice of the Pasteur name for an avenue in Boston in 1907

In addition to its primary role to advance the mission of the Institut Pasteur and fund research to improve public health, the Pasteur Foundation is also home base for the U.S. history pertaining to Louis Pasteur. America’s fascination with the scientist dates to Louis Pasteur’s success in finding a cure for rabies, and, in particular, to his treatment of four boys from Newark, New Jersey, in 1885. The American medical community reacted swiftly and began to establish centers to provide the treatment locally.

The rabies breakthrough sealed Pasteur’s fate as a global hero. There is almost certainly a street named for Louis Pasteur in every city in France, and none is more grand than the Boulevard Pasteur, which runs through the heart of the 15th arrondissement between Montparnasse and the Institut Pasteur. In the United States, from California to Virginia and from Texas to Massachusetts, Pasteur’s name has been given to avenues, roads, courts and drives.

Sprinkled throughout the United States, a variety of effigies and remembrances of Louis Pasteur pay tribute to his role as a founder of modern science. Pasteur’s name and image may be found on buildings, in murals, on schools and in chapels. Alone or grouped with other geniuses from Hippocrates to Einstein, Louis Pasteur is always a first-pick on the “dream team” of science.
