With assistance from French Ambassador Jean-David Levitte and Swiss Consul General Christoph Bubb, Institut Pasteur President Dr. Alice Dautry presented the 2007 Pasteur Foundation Award to Dr. Daniel Vasella, Chief Executive Officer of Novartis, for "the great spirit of commitment to biomedical research, to innovative drug development and, in particular, to global public health that characterize his career." As a special souvenir for Dr. Vasella, Dr. Dautry offered a replica of Louis Pasteur's famous swan-necked flask made by a master glassblower at the Institut Pasteur. The originals of the flask used in Pasteur's spontaneous generation experiments are on view at the Pasteur Museum in Paris.

In a special message to Dr. Vasella, Former President Bill Clinton, the 2005 Pasteur Foundation Award recipient, wrote "As new threats to our health continue to present themselves, we look to medical science for answers, protection, and hope, and to humanitarians willing to exert the energy and resources necessary to ensure that people of limited resources do not suffer unnecessarily from preventable diseases…. It was particularly meaningful to me to receive this award because it was given by an organization with a deep devotion to improving public health worldwide."

The evening raised a record-breaking amount - $1,120,000 - for the Pasteur Foundation's programs in support of infectious disease research conducted at the Institut Pasteur. The Gala Chairman and the Pasteur Foundation American Advisory Board wish to thank every gala donor for making this event an historic success.
