PASTEUR FOUNDATION

The Pasteur Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, works to raise funds to support the world-renowned Institut Pasteur in Paris, France, whose mission is to improve public health by contributing to the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. The institute accomplishes this through research, teaching and public health initiatives. In December 2008, two researchers – Françoise Barré-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier – were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for their discovery of the AIDS virus at the Institut Pasteur in 1983. A total of ten Pasteur researchers have received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Faithful to the spirit that drove Louis Pasteur, the mission of the Pasteur Foundation is based on the principle that infectious diseases, because they do not recognize geopolitical boundaries, pose a threat to global public health. Their prevention and the control of their proliferation through research, prophylaxis and epidemiological surveillance and, above all, through a thorough and basic scientific understanding, are achievable goals.

The mission of the Pasteur Foundation is to help the Institut Pasteur in its work by funding specific projects, promoting scientific exchanges with American researchers and by raising funds for the advancement of science. Read more about our mission.»

Since it opened on November 14, 1888, the Institut Pasteur has been at the forefront of disease research, true to the vision of its founder, Louis Pasteur. Among many other accomplishments, our scientists have discovered the AIDS virus, identified genes responsible for hereditary deafness, and devised a test to detect influenza A(H1N1), the virus at the root of the 2009 pandemic.
