In honor of our 2010 gala, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg proclaimed May 17, 2010, to be "Pasteur Foundation Day." Franck Riboud, Chairman and CEO of Danone, and Muhammad Yunus, 2006 Nobel Peace Laureate, received the Pasteur Foundation 2010 Award for their work to alleviate poverty and improve nutrition.

On May 6, 2009, Wayne F. Pisano, President and CEO of Sanofi Pasteur, received our award. Nobel Laureate Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, the guest of honor, was also recognized that evening.

On May 7, 2008, the Pasteur Foundation Award was presented to Nelson Mandela and Richard Holbrooke. In a congratulatory message, President Nicholas Sarkozy wrote to President Mandela: “The world requires the wisdom of a few outstanding individuals who can share the depth of their judgment and the magnanimity of their action. You are one such figure, in whom every individual should find inspiration.” President Sarkozy wrote to Ambassador Holbrooke: “Your well-known talents as a diplomat led you to consider, well before many others, that infectious diseases could become an issue in international politics; AIDS is a particularly striking example of this.”

The Pasteur Foundation presented its award to Daniel Vasella, M.D., on May 3, 2007. In a congratulatory message, President Clinton wrote “I have always believed that businesses can do well by doing good, and your stewardship of Novartis AG over the last decade stands as testament to that belief.”

Our “Spring Songbook: An American in Paris” Gala was held on June 7, 2006, and honored Elizabeth R. Fondaras, Founding Chairman of the Pasteur Foundation American Advisory Board. For 50 years, Liz Fondaras devoted herself to bicultural exchanges. And for nearly 20 years with extraordinary commitment, she led our efforts to bring to light in the U.S. the work of the Institut Pasteur.

On April 19, 2005, President William Jefferson Clinton received the our award in particular recognition of his remarkable humanitarian work on HIV/AIDS. Due to his efforts, people living with and fighting this disease in the developing world are gaining greater access to affordable treatment.
