Milton Horn's “The Pylons” at West Virginia UniversitySculptor Milton Horn's representation in seven panels of the history of the healing arts may be seen at the West Virginia University Medical Center. Better known as “The Pylons,” these stone towers stand 15 feet tall and are carved from white Georgia marble. Figures from the history of medicine, dentistry, nursing and pharmacy appear in bas-relief. Louis Pasteur is depicted in the company of Hippocrates, Aristotle, Semmelweis and Roentgen, among others. Louis Pasteur is shown inoculating a dog in a rabies experiment. The architect of the medical center conceived of the artwork because he believed that such a magnificent building should have art to inspire those who would be using its facilities. Date: 1956 Location: Morgantown, West Virginia Acknowledgment: Bert Hansen and West Virginia University Medical Center
