Several monumental panels from Doris Appel's sculpture series entitled "Hall of Medicine" including Louis Pasteur and Marie Curie among others

Doris Appel's “Hall of Medicine” at the University of Texas Medical Branch

Doris Appel at work sculpting in her studio in MassaschusettsHappened upon in a lobby, an artwork as striking as this is rare. Conceived as a tribute to the evolution of medical science, this monumental sculptural series was created by the artist and medical historian Doris Leavitt Appel (left). The figures unfold in a subtle artistic progression beginning with an archaic bas-relief of Imhotep to a modern sculptural Marie Curie. Appel’s depiction of Louis Pasteur offers a gentle, humanistic portrait of the pioneering microbiologist holding a rabbit, a reference to Pasteur’s most famous work – the rabies prophylaxis. For comparison, included below are two of her other studies of Pasteur.

Regarding her "Hall of Medicine," Appel commented: “These figures represent the great ones in the fascinating story of medicine, beginning with Imhotep, the Egyptian of 5,000 years ago, down through ancient Greece, Rome, Arabia, the Renaissance, into the 20th century. The purpose of this project was to bring together in one place the great peaks in the history of medicine, so that you who are now here can feel and visualize the vastness and the grandeur and the spirit of the heritage of modern medicine.”

There are two versions of this important medical history cycle: one is located in Boston University Medical Center’s Instructional Building lobby and the other, depicted here, is handsomely displayed in the John P. McGovern Hall of Medical History at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.
