Emerson C. Burkhart's Mural at Ohio State University's Stillman HallArtist Emerson C. Burkhart was commissioned by Dr. Charles C. Stillman, then director of the School of Social Work at Ohio State University, to paint a Works Progress Administration mural cycle of 10 panels representing the stages of concern for human welfare. In October 1939, Burkhart completed the paintings after 13 months of work. Located on the fourth floor of Stillman Hall, the murals have titles, such as “Medieval Charity,” “Elizabethan Court Life” and “America’s Intellectual Awakening.” In one of the six panels on the east wall, Louis Pasteur is portrayed in a Christ-like pose, his microscope before him, as the father of the public health movement. Also included in this panel is an inscription of Pasteur’s words: “Science, by obeying the laws of humanity, will always labor to enlarge the frontiers of life. I have the invincible belief that science and peace will triumph over ignorance and war, that nations will unite not to destroy but to build, and that the future will belong to those who will have done the most for the suffering of humanity.” Burkhart (1905-1969) was born in Kalida, Ohio and is regarded as one of the state’s leading artists; his work has also received national acclaim. Date: 1939 Location: Columbus, Ohio Acknowledgment: Michelle Drobik, Richard Frehs, Bert Hansen, Jeff Thomas, Tom Thomson, Teresa Weidenbusch and the Ohio State University Archives
