William C. Palmer's “The Development of Medicine” Mural at Queens Hospital CenterTrained by Thomas Hart Benton and Kenneth Hayes Miller, painter William C. Palmer created a series of WPA murals depicting “The Development of Medicine” for the Incoming and Outgoing Ward at Queens General Hospital, New York City, now Queens Hospital Center. One of the Palmer murals portrays Pasteur and his work on rabies. Bent over a crate containing a mad dog, Pasteur is seen sucking the dog's saliva through a tube to extract it for use in a prophylactic. According to a catalogue, “A New Deal for Public Art: Murals from Federal Work Programs,” from the Bronx Museum of the Arts, Palmer's series is believed to have been used to teach medicine to nurses and interns. Damaged after a move, the murals were restored, thanks to funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation. Date: 1938 Location: Queens, New York Acknowledgment: Bert Hansen
