To Come: Detail of Maxwell Starr's Mural at Brooklyn Technical High School

Maxwell Starr's “The History of Mankind in Terms of Mental and Physical Power” Mural at Brooklyn Tech

Located in New York at 29 Fort Greene Place, Brooklyn Technical High School’s magnificent Works Progress Administration murals by painter Maxwell Starr is titled “The History of Mankind in Terms of Mental and Physical Power.” Because the school's then-principal, Albert L. Colston, determined that the series must encompass the history of science, Pasteur is depicted among other science heroes, such as Morse, Edison, Bell and Marconi. Starr's thoughts about the series’ theme are included below the mural:

“Thus by the union of mind & matter man learns to harness the natural forces/becomes master of the machine and with freedom he holds within his hands power over his destiny/the progress of man’s creative mind is a record of evolutionary change by means of observation analysis & synthesis towards a more enlightened civilization triumphant over ignorance & superstition”
