December 1994 Tribute Letter from Bill Clinton for the 1995 Centennial Celebration of Louis Pasteur

Presidential Letter Commemorating “The Year of Louis Pasteur”

In 1995, UNESCO and the Institut Pasteur celebrated “The Year of Louis Pasteur” to commemorate the centennial of the scientist’s death. Scientific colloquia, expositions and lectures were held throughout the world. President William J. Clinton sent this letter to the Institut Pasteur for the opening ceremonies of the centenary:

THE WHITE HOUSE

WASHINGTON

December 19, 1994

I am delighted to greet all who are gathered to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the passing of Louis Pasteur.

At a time in history when science and technology have revolutionized every aspect of human life, it is fitting that we pay tribute to the brilliance and vision of one of our world’s greatest humanitarians.  Pasteur’s innovative work in the study of infectious diseases led to the development of new vaccines that have saved millions of lives over the decades.  Today, thanks to Pasteur’s dedication to progress, our children can be immunized against such plagues as smallpox, measles, rabies, and tuberculosis.  As we work to create a safer, healthier society for people everywhere, his example continues to educate, uplift, and inspire us all.

Best wishes for a memorable celebration.

Bill Clinton
